Chicago Theological Seminary (CTS) seeks an experienced, faithful, and dynamic leader to serve as its next president. Founded in 1855 by leaders from the Congregationalist Churches in the Midwest, CTS is affiliated with the United Church of Christ and serves multiple faith communities and the larger world by educating persons theologically and cultivating the intellectual, pastoral, and spiritual capacities of lay and ordained religious leaders, scholars, and activists who contribute to the increase of justice and mercy. From its inception, CTS has been at the forefront of theological education and social justice. An independent, interdependent, prophetic voice and innovative leader for theology in action, CTS prepares agents for transformation as “leaders for the next.” CTS alumni/ae are among the world’s most esteemed and prolific faith leaders, theologians, teachers, activists, and advocates for social justice. Today CTS prepares its students for leadership and service across a wide range of ministry, advocacy, community, and organizational contexts. Seminarians come from a variety of faith traditions seeking a progressive theological education. The student population is intentionally diverse ensuring all communities can engage in theological studies. Racial, ethnic, gender, and LGBTQ communities are well represented among the students, faculty, staff, and administration. CTS has a student-body of 324 students and a $6 million annual budget and a $28 million endowment.
The successful candidate will be an experienced theological and institutional leader with a track-record of dynamic and effective organizational leadership as well as a deep and abiding alignment with the CTS mission and commitments. Furthermore, the successful candidate will have the demonstrated skills and experience to provide resilient and transformative leadership to the Seminary amidst the backdrop of significant shifts in the broader landscape of theological education, religious institutions, and society at large. All candidates must have experience cultivating and leading high-performing teams and organizations; knowledge of key trends in theological education and the evolving institutional, communal, and societal need for theologically trained leaders; and an ability to nurture and grow strong partnerships and relationships with students, faculty, alumni, and other partners and supporters in the broader social, civic, philanthropic, institutional, and cultural landscape.
