Boards need to be reminded of other resources they bring in addition to their capacity for strategic thinking. Thrivent, the Lutheran fraternal benefit society, has launched an effort to free future Evangelical Lutheran pastors from the burden of post-ordination education debt, reversing the trend that began in most churches in the mid-twentieth century to bill their prospective clergy for their education. The strategy raises a question for all boards: In today's world, is charging tuition the only way to cover the cost of preparing the church's ministers for service?
