A study by the In Trust Center’s Good Governance Initiative last year asked boards about how they do their work. The quantitative study included questions about how long boards meet, and while the information provides an understanding of board meetings, a qualitative study being conducted this year will provide greater insight as to whether boards feel they are getting the work done they feel is necessary and if they have the time to do that work.
The data can be used to help boards think through their own work. Reflective questions (below) can provide boards with prompts to consider for internal discussion and board education.
You can find out more about the Governance Initiative and upcoming work at intrust.org.
Questions for reflection
- Does your board have enough time in meetings to do the work it should?
- How does your board engage between board meetings?
- Do you think your board appropriately prioritizes its time and work in meetings?
