The ebbing tide of the pandemic became an opportunity for seminaries to regain some sense of normalcy, and what more celebratory time in the rhythm of academic life than graduation? In the U.S., the occasion brought a flowering of creativity uniting pomp, circumstance, and the evolving customs of masking and distancing: drive-through conferrals, outdoor ceremonies under tents, and limited guest attendance characterized the landscape in 2021. In Canada, where custom, geography, and government led to stricter lockdowns, virtual ceremonies were the norm.
